Emphysema Symptoms

According to the American Lung Association over 3 million people in the U.S. have emphysema. That number may be higher since some people go undiagnosed. Early diagnosis is vital for proper emphysema management. Although the severity can vary, emphysema symptoms may include:
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Increased mucus production
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Low exercise tolerance

Emphysema Risk Factors:

In the United States, the number one risk factor for developing emphysema is cigarette smoking. Additional emphysema risk factors may include:
  • Exposure to pollutants
  • Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke

Emphysema Treatment

Nebulized Breathing Treatments

Emphysema treatment often includes the use of nebulizers, which deliver medication to the airways in the form of an aerosol that then gets inhaled. Medication, including bronchodilators, may be prescribed to open up the airways and reduce emphysema symptoms. Lincare offers both portable and stationary nebulizer compressors  based on needs.

Oxygen Therapy

Emphysema can lead to low oxygen levels in the body, fatigue and shortness of breath. Supplemental oxygen may be prescribed by your practitioner to ease symptoms. At Lincare, we offer a variety of oxygen delivery systems and devices to meet your respiratory needs.
